Hill stations in India were developed by the British around a central mall to get respite from the depressive summer heat. Many have lakes as their focal point, making them best places for boating activities.In India most of the hill stations are located in Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Sikkim, West Bengal, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland and Meghalaya, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Kerala..
All these hill stations are world-famous they are visited frequently by tourists in summers. Due to this case, almost all of the above hill stations are well connected by rail, road and air services.

1. Srinagar, Jammu & Kashmir :

Srinagar is known as the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir. It lies in Kashmir Valley on the banks of Jhelum River. It attracts visitors with its lovely lakes and gardens. Srinagar is often referred as the “Land of Lakes and Gardens” due to abundance of lakes and Gardens. Also Asia’s largest garden is present in Srinagar which is known as tulip garden. A tulip festival is held every year in April. There are a large number of golf courses present in Srinagar.



2. Manali, Himachal Pradesh :

Manali is a valley present in the mountains of Himachal Pradesh at an altitude of 2,050 m in the Beas River Valley. It is about 270 kms far from the state capital, Shimla and 544 kms of northeast Delhi. It is located in Kullu District. It is considered as India’s most popular destinations and also serves as a gateway to Lahaul & Spiti districts and also Leh.




3. Nainital, Uttrakhand :

Nainital is a popular hill station in Uttrakhand. It is situated at an altitude of 2,084 metres above the sea level. It features serene, Naini Lake, and the Mall linked with many restaurants, malls and markets. It is truly one of the best hill stations in India which one should visit atleast once in lifetime.









4. Mussoorie, Uttrakhand :

Mussoorie is a hill station situated in the Dehradun district of the north Indian state Uttrakhand. It is about 35 kms from the state capital Dehradun and about 290 kms from Delhi. This hill station is situated in the foothills of Garhwal Himalayan range. As it is situated at the altitude of 1,880 metres, Mussoorie, is a fascinating hill with its green hills and varied flora and fauna.







5. Shimla, Himachal Pradesh :

Shimla, also known as Simla, is the capital of the north Indian State Himachal Pradesh. It is also a district which is bounded by Mandi and Kullu District. It is used to be the summer capital of the British Raj when they used to rule over India. It is the commercial cultural and educational centre of the hilly regions of the state. It is also known for its handicraft shops, The Mall, as well as the Lakkar Bazaar, specializes in wooden toys and crafts.



6. Munnar, Kerala :

Munnar is a hill station located in Idukki district of south western state of Kerala. If you like tea a visit to Munnar in Kerala is a must. The surrounding region in Munnar is acclaimed for its tea plantations. 7. Darjeeling, West Bengal :

Darjeeling is a town in the state of West Bengal located in the Lesser Himalayas at an altitude of 6,700 ft. It is famous for its Tea Gardens and the stunning view of Mount Kanchenjunga, the world's third highest peak. 8. Kodaikanal, Tamil Nadu :

Kodaikanal is located in the hills of Dindigul district in the state of Tamil Nadu. Kodaikanal by its name refers “Gift of the Forest” and there are a variety of flora and fauna there. There are many waterfalls to enjoy picnic beside. In Kodaikanal the herbs and aromatherapy oils are some of the interesting things to buy.







9. Ooty, Tamil Nadu :

Ooty is also referred to as Udagamandalam is a town in the state of Tamil Nadu, located 86 km north of Coimbatore and 128 km south of Mysore. It was established in the early 19th century by the British as the summer headquarters of the Chennai government.It is a soothing place to escape the summer heat in Tamil Nadu. The flower show, boating on Ooty Lake, and climbing Dodabetta Peak for an amazing view of the Nilgiri hills are a must visit destinations.



10. Matheran, Maharashtra:

Matheran is a hill station in the state of Maharashtra. It is the smallest hill station in India and is  located on the Western Ghats range at an altitude of around 800 m above the sea level. It is eco-sensitive region declared by the Government of India and Asia’s only automobile free hill station even bicycles are banned there. It is a calming place to relax away from any noise.
